About Partner Visa
A Partner Visa lets the spouse or de facto partner of an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen live in Australia. It is a two-stage pathway: you are granted a temporary visa first, and the permanent visa later, once your genuine and ongoing relationship is confirmed. GENERAL DOCUMENT CHECKLIST
To apply for a Partner Visa, you will generally need to provide:
- proof of identity, such as a passport and birth certificate
- your marriage certificate, or evidence of a de facto relationship of at least 12 months
- evidence of a genuine and continuing relationship across four areas: financial, household, social and commitment
- Form 888 statutory declarations from Australian citizens or permanent residents who know your relationship
- proof your sponsor is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen
- health examination results and police clearances to meet the character requirements

The Department of Home Affairs base application charge is AUD 11,710 for the primary applicant (from 1 July 2026), which covers both the temporary and permanent stages. The Partner Visa is a direct pathway to permanent residency. Once your permanent visa (subclass 801 or 100) is granted, you can live in Australia indefinitely and, after meeting the residency requirements, apply for Australian citizenship.
You can include your dependent children in your Partner Visa application so your immediate family can settle in Australia together. Each child must meet the health and character requirements, and you will need to provide evidence of your relationship to them.
